Default tragic death of lady who died outside Florida hospital

http://m.nydailynews.com/news/crime/...icle-1.2489381

I firmly believe that if she weren't poor, black, uninsured or underinsured, that she would have received adequate medical care.
Black lives matter is more than just a slogan about profiling and police shootings. Racial discrimination in healthcare is a fact in some areas. I have seen it firsthand.

I realize that you dont go to a rural area for world class healthcare. But the double standard of what passes for medical care in certain parts of the U.S. is truly appalling. I hope that this hospital is sued out of existence and that the persons responsible for her death lose their licenses. Florida is two clicks from a banana republic anyway so I doubt that anything will really change.

Since the mental institution I was incarcerated in was in Miami, Fl, I agree with you about the banana republic bit and I am proof that you don't have to be black to get crappy health care there. You only have to lack money, insurance, influence, etc.

I agree this woman was a clinically unattractive person and the fact she was black and poor did not help.

She, from what press says, was a frequent flier with history of multiple altercations with personnel and police in the very same ER where the accident happened.

Anyone who ever worked in large inner city ER knows how to deal with patients like that. Unfortunately, it all happened in a tiny 25 -beds community hospital which possibly did not have trained (and used to things) personnel, leaving alone resources to manage full-blown PE anyway. Wrong patient, wrong place, wrong time, bad outcome.

In one recent discussion on TOL there was an observation of a participant who described herself as rapid responce RN that non-civil, demanding and angry patients/families have worse outcomes during critical events because nursing staff contacts them only when absolutely necessary and so symptoms which might be otherwise noticed go missing. I made the same conclusion quite long ago. It would be interesting subject for nursing research, although I see no way how it could be legally done and results publushed without making an avalance.

The problem with crying wolf once too often.

Using chaos and threats to get what you want has consequences.

She must have been terrified when she realized that there would be no rescue this time. I feel bad for that.

I wouldn't want to be their risk manager. This is gonna get expensive.

Newly Released Police Dash-Cam Video Shows Arrest of Woman Who Died After Being Forced From Florida Hospital - ABC News

She was only there overnight for abdominal pain. The entire 22 minute police audiotape of her begging to stay is heart wrenching.

Police Called to Hospital Multiple Times Prior to Barbara Dawson Death | News | wtxl.com

Once in 2006 for a dispute with registering a minor.
Once in 2012 for wanting a different MD.
Once in 2013 for being disruptive as an inpatient.

The Barbara Dawsons of the world do react loudly when they are treated
with less than respect as I am sure that she was in this joke of a hospital.

I am sure she was treated with less than respect. It appears that her usual demeanor is less than respectful. Whether or not the hospital is a joke, someone who behaves disrespectfully is apt to be treated disrespectfully.
