Did I read that right, that they routinely cut back on such things a peds, OB, and psych? That's not just scary, that's terrifying. Okay, the first two are bad enough, but what about the people who are hallucinating, eaten up by their own fears, etc., having their tx cut back or, worse, suddenly stopped? That can have disastrous results, believe me.

Health care has cost far too much for far too long, and are the fat-cats the ones to suffer for it? You tell me.

It really is scary. Long Beach Memorial that is mentioned in the article is my kids' primary Hospital the few times I have had to go to the ER with them it is packed and standing room only. I delivered DS2 there in in 2003 and had a very good experience.
It is sad that so many people are loosing thier heath ins. or that the out of pocket has gotten so out of control that people can't afford it.
My health ins had a dramatic increase this year from last. Now ER is $100 copay up from $50, office visits went from $10 to $15, hospitalization went from $500 to $1000 and perscritions are now $20,$30 $50. I have Kaiser.
The kids have an Pacificare HMO through dads work and he could not longer pay the premiums for the PPO they have had for the past 2 years. Thier out of pocket is just as bad as mine.
If eveyone had a cold at the same time and needed Dr. visits it would cost me about $100 bucks alone, then if perscriptions are needed it would be doubled.

Of all the units to cut back on OMG.

I guess they forgot history.

A similar thing happened when I was growing up in NY when the stock market crashed. The city officials in conjunction with many hospitals literally just put psych patients out in the streets and the numbers of homeless, mentally ill people was enormous. The homicide rates literally shot through the roof.

On the pediatric side I remember kids in school w/ringworm, chronic ear infections, etc and everything was just left untreated or home remedies were used because people just didn't have the money for follow up care of any kind.

I never fooled around with ear infections, but I discovered that, if caught early enough, ringworm can be killed by scrubbing each lesion with Betadine.

"Hospital layoffs hurt patient care, said Rose Ann DeMoro, executive director of the California Nurses Assn. She said hospital systems also were beginning to ask for concessions, such as cuts in retirement and sick leave benefits, from organized labor."

Not only does it hurt patient care, but it puts nurses and other health professionals at risk of losing their registration, as well as increased potential for legal errors

We truly are in for some scary times and it will be the patient care that will suffer. To cut back on necessary areas for patient care is down right criminal
