He died five weeks later.

The turbine-style "heart" didn't fail; the patient was dying from several different disease processes and the mechanical heart bought him five weeks he didn't otherwise have. He was an interesting first human patient for the procedure, in that all he had to do was survive the surgery and post-op period for it to be a success.

Long-term, though, we still have to see if this device will work to keep a body that was designed for a pumping heart functioning and healthy.
