Default Need ideas for jobs

Looking for something more laid-back than this uptight and insane step-down.

Probably should avoid higher-acuity units and those that brag about Magnet status or high customer service, which they get by pushing the nurses.

I know HH and hospice and research, those have been suggested before here. Haven't had a lot of luck there.

But how about something like dialysis or case management?

Or perhaps rehab, or good 'ol med-surg?

Mabye x-ray or cath lab or something like that?

Doesn't need to be ideal or even that specific, just start tossing the ideas out there and I'll be appreciative

What about Psych?

I'm hoping for Hospice.... or if I move to Oregon, Radiology or Hospice.

I can't stand Med/Surg.

All of my classmates want L&D. I would too... if I were working at a regular hospital... but I won't be.

Joe on the end of our Coronary Care unit was the cath lab, most of our male nurses worked there and loved it. Very interesting and you only have one patient in there at a time!

What about IR? or OR nursing? Those are a bit less busy in a sense... people aren't totally awake, etc. :)

PACU/Recovery Room. One patient at a time and when they wake up, they go back up to the floor. Good hours.

I work on a psych floor in a large hospital and yes I enjoy it. No clinical things to deal with. If they get sick they get transferred to a medical floor.

Insurance Review. I see ads for those jobs in the paper.

People have mentioned psych before to me. I could be good at that, I'm a very good listener and like the interpersonal interaction more than the many and chaotic clinical duties.

But I did inpatient psych at a large teaching hospital and it was a very stressful experience. Some very deranged people there, always a potential for violence. But perhaps all psych isn't like that.

There are different kinds of Psych, Joe. There's Adolescent and Geriatric. There's also a regular Adult Psych ward. I was always afraid of it, but then we started getting more and more Psych patients on my floor. Most are not bad as they are dealing with PTSD and Depression, but there is one who can be a handful at times.

Our Inpatient Psych won't take anyone unless they are medically stable, otherwise we get them.

Is there a VA hospital near you? They have wonderful opportunities as you can work the floor, or in the clinics or on a specialized floor.

Acute Psych wouldn't be for you Joe. That's a little over-whelming although, God Bless em, there are nurses who love acute psych. As Kylee said there are many areas of psych and yes they have to be medically stable. If they start to run a temp, etc. They get shipped off to a medical floor.

We only give PO meds, an occasional IM like Phenergan, Tordol, etc.
No IV's. Lot's of interaction with the patients. You can really make a difference in somebody's life. I work with detox patients. They are challenging but once you sit down and talk to them they are just like everyone else only with an addiction issue and it's interesting to learn how they became addicted and it's gratifying (very) to help them to overcome their addiction.

As well spoken (well written) as you are have you thought about data transcription? Some of them you could even work independently out of your home. I did some medical transcription when I worked at the doctor's office.

What about a Dr. Office?....maybe something that you like. (ie orthopod, cardiologist, etc.) Office manager for me was a great position with office hours, limited weekend work, etc. I enjoyed the challenge of data management (calls from Nursing homes, HH, Hospice, etc and relaying info to the MD's). Calling in scripts, arranging referrals, etc.

Or even a surgery center. It wouldn't get too boring, you'd have some charting and interaction but on a measured basis. Scheduled surgeries would be fairly routine and manageable.

I know one thing-you can do this. Med surg inhales.

I was a medical transcriptionist for 5 years and loved it. Would love to do it again.
