Default I Thought This Was Beautiful

I don't know where this came from so I can't give credit but I thought it was worthy of being shared.

You have carried your life to this bed and now rest before me
.......a pilgrim, quietly anticipating the journey ahead.
I hear the restless rhythm of your breath,
Already seeking escape from its worldly tide.
I wash your skin, observing the marks the years have imprinted on you,
And contemplate their meaning.
Your eyes stare upward,
What do they see?
Within their depths is a watery pool, with you by its edge,
Ready to fall in.
Your body is exhaustion.
I lift you and move you across the bed.
You respond to my touch.
I tell you I wish I knew the right words to say.
Your hand closes around mine.

Yesterday we were strangers,
But I have caught whispers of memories passing between the lips of
those you love.
Through their tears and smiles and testaments to you,
I have come to know you,
And I am reassured that you will not be forgotten.

Now there is nothing left to say.
I touch you to let you know that I am with you,
A companion to your dying.
I am grateful to you,
For your fading life has reminded me of my mortality,
And I renew my commitment to a life full of meaning.
The silence is filled with the questions of my heart,
And your dying has opened my mortal ears.
I rediscover the courage to sit with you,
For all that is left is me;
No words, no busy hands,
Only my presence,
A witness to your passing.

The lump in my throat tells me the time has come.
I feel the fading of your pulse as your strength slips away.
Your breath has become the gentle kiss of an eagle's wings as it
begins its final glide.
Then you are gone.
You have lifted yourself from this bed, your world.
You are free.....to dance, to sing;
Your breath and the wind are now as one.

That is beautiful. Thanks for sharing. A lot of people need to read that, and one example that comes to mind was the brand new nurse (who had been a CNA) who was afraid to go into the room of a pt. who had just died. I know she was young, but the amount of fear she was displaying I still can't understand.

That was beautiful. Could be words from any nurses heart as we've all had to deal with death. I am thankful for nurses like Sabby and all of you.
