I think since his dog had been labelled a "problem dog/breed" he probably felt nobody would take him.
I also think he was profoundly depressed and when you are then just getting up in the morning is overwhelming. Haven't been that way for 30 years now, but I can remember how awful it is.
He probably new deep down that he was going to kill himself and I think he was actually trying to be sure his dog died peacefully and put him to sleep out of love. Not being able to see any alternative.
I hope they have been reunited at the Rainbow Bridge.
